I Made You a Free Class…

Learn Lectio Divina: Paint Isaiah 60

A Free Mini Class in Scripture, Prayer, and Art-Making

I have just opened a new free mini class, and I would love to invite you in.

It is called:

Learn Lectio Divina: Paint Isaiah 60

This class is for anyone who wants to come close to Scripture in a slower, more creative, more embodied way.

It is for the spiritually curious.
It is for the artistically curious.
It is for the lifelong believer who wants Scripture to feel fresh again.
It is for the reconstructing believer - because “deconstruction” is so 2020.
It is for the person who has always wanted to make art but felt a little shy about beginning.
It is for the person who suspects that beauty may be one of the ways God is getting their attention.

In this free class, I will guide you through my own artful version of lectio divina, a slow and prayerful way of reading Scripture.

Then we will paint from Isaiah 60.

Not as performance.
Not as perfection.
But as prayer.

What Is Lectio Divina?

Lectio divina is Latin for “divine reading.”

It is an ancient Christian practice of reading Scripture slowly, prayerfully, and attentively. Rather than rushing through a passage to gather information, we linger with the Word. We listen. We notice. We allow a phrase, image, or invitation to shimmer.

Then we respond.

In this class, our response will become a small mixed-media painting inspired by Isaiah 60.

We will read slowly.
We will pray simply.
We will ruminate in a holy way.
We will meditate before the text.
And then we will serve with what we have received, by creating something beautiful with our hands.

That last part matters deeply to me.

I believe art-making is an act of service, for the believer.

A poem can serve.
A painting can serve.
A small handmade thing can nurture the heart of another human being.

Beauty is not extra. Beauty is not frivolous. Beauty is one of the ways we remember what is true.

Why Isaiah 60?

Our text for this class is Isaiah 60, especially the beautiful opening invitation:

“Arise, shine; for thy light is come.”

This passage is full of image, movement, promise, and light.

There is rising.
There is shining.
There is glory.
There is darkness being answered by illumination.
There is a summons to lift up our eyes and see.

As an artist, I cannot read Isaiah 60 without seeing color.

I see the glow of the sky.
I see mountains and water.
I see birds in motion.
I see light breaking through.

In the class, we will let the poetry and prophecy of Isaiah 60 guide us into a simple, luminous painting. You do not need to make your painting look exactly like mine. You do not need to consider yourself an artist. You do not need fancy supplies.

You only need a willingness to slow down, listen, and make a visible response to invisible grace.

What You Will Create

Together, we will create a small mixed-media landscape inspired by Isaiah 60.

The piece includes:

  • a warm, glowing sky

  • mountains

  • water

  • trees

  • birds in motion

  • sun and moon imagery

  • layered marks and texture

The finished piece becomes more than a project.

It becomes a record of your listening.

A small visual prayer.

A reminder that the light still comes.

Why I Created This Class

One of my primary rituals for kindling creativity, whether I am working with pen or paintbrush, is prayer and Scripture.

I believe God is the Original Artist.

One of the ways I come into contact with His creativity is through His Word. Scripture is not merely information. It is living, active, poetic, prophetic, and full of holy imagination.

At least one third of the Bible was written as poetry. That tells me something.

God is not only the Original Artist. He is also the Original Wordsmith.

His Word is holy art.

And we are free to create art from His art.

I created this class because I want to offer you a gentle doorway into that practice.

A way to read.
A way to listen.
A way to pray.
A way to make.
